Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Can I stay in your homestay?

A. Sorry! We have moved to Ontario, and do not do homestay anymore. There are many other good homestays in Victoria, and we recommend that you ask your ESL school to arrange a homestay for you.

Q. What can I do if I don't like my homestay?

A. If you do not like your homestay, you can always change it. Your school may be able to help you find a homestay that is better for you, and your friends also may be able to help you find a new homestay, or a share house.

Q. Do you have pets?

A. Yes we do! We have three cats, named ‘Klee Wyck’, ‘Tom’, and ‘Jessie’. They come into the house, but are not allowed in the student’s rooms unless you invite them in. We also have two budgie birds, ‘Peter’ and ‘Wendy’, who live in their cage next to the wood stove. We are careful to keep the house very clean, and use air filters to make sure the air in the house is always fresh.

Some of the students become friends with the cats. Here is what Jinny thinks of them:

Q. Is it easy to get around Victoria by bus?

A. Yes, we are located in James Bay, just a twenty-minute walk or ten-minute bus ride from downtown. The bus service is very good, and the busses run between downtown and James Bay often. There are also busses that travel directly to the University of Victoria campus and to Camosun College.

Q: Are there other homestay hosts you’d recommend?

A: Here are two homestays in Vancouver that have web pages you can visit:

  • ‘Mama Linda’ (email: linda1958b@hotmail.com.) Her web page is here. Mama Linda’s homestay focuses on building friendships and activities.
  • Ella and Ehab’s Homestay Vancouver – “An affordable friendly homestay host family in Vancouver”. Ella and Ehab also run the Vancouver Homestay Agency that lists other host families in Vancouver.

There are also agencies and web sites that can arrange homestay for you in different cities across Canada. We are listed as a host family with Lucid Communication Solutions, who specialize in making arrangements for students from Japan, and with Global Lifestyles and Home Sweet Homestay in Victoria.

You might also want to try Assist Education Consultants, Homestay Web, and Vancouver ESL Homestay.

Q. Are there some other web sites for ESL teachers and students that you’d recommend?

A. Yes, try ESLTeachersBoard.com for a good list of teacher-oriented ESL sites and resources.
