More about Victoria

Victoria is the capital city of British Columbia and has a long history dating back to the 1800s. Market Square and Chinatown are located in “Old Town”; the buildings look almost the same as they did 100 years ago.

Old Town has been used as a set in many movies about the old west. Chinatown is the place Dan and I buy much of the food for your meals, including green tea and asian specialties.

Victoria has many unique shops, including Smoking Lily.Across the Street from Market Square visit one of the smallest shops in Canada! Smoking Lily screen-prints some of the most beautiful lingerie and scarves in Victoria. The store gained national recognition for their cute ‘Pierre Trudeau’ underwear a couple of years ago. Smoking Lily is the place for unusual Canadian gifts!

The Starbucks in Cahpters book store is a favorite downtown hangout.Just a short walk to Douglas Street takes you to Chapters Bookstore, where you can relax and study at Starbucks Coffee or look at the good selection of ESL books, including story and informational books printed for ESL readers—from beginners to advanced.

The Victoria Public Library on Broughton Street is another great place for ESL reading and studying material. Apply for a temporary library card and borrow foreign language books, magazines and newspapers.

The Victoria Public Library is also a popular. place for students to meet friends and borrow books and movies.

Emily Carr House was the home of one of Victoria’s most famous artists, Emily Carr. You can tour her house and see some of her artwork. Her paintings, along with many other Victoria artists' work, often appear at the Victoria Art Gallery on Moss Street.

Victoria’s Parliament Buildings and the world-famous Empress Hotel overlook the Inner Harbour—one of the most scenic harbours in the world. Walk along the promenade and stop for creamy ice cream, fresh-squeezed juice and fragrant coffee at one of the many cart-vendors, or visit the world-class Royal British Columbia Museum across the road. Souvenir books on Victoria history can be purchased at the Royal British Columbia Museum and at bookstores.

Beacon Hill Park is a short walk up the hill from the Empress Hotel and the Inner Harbour. The Park covers several acres from Simcoe Street to Dallas Road and has lakes, gardens, totem poles, and a children’s petting zoo and play area. It’s a great place to relax, picnic and photograph the fabulous flowers and trees. Don't forget to buy a soft ice cream at the Beacon Drive-In. All of our students love their ice cream the best!

The tallest totem pole in the world is in Beacn Hill Park.If you’re lucky enough to visit Victoria in the summer, make sure you join in the fun at the ‘FolkFest’, the International Folk Festival. Food and music and dancing from all over the globe are featured at this lively event! Also, the Dragon Boat Festival is a fun summer event!

Our favorite coffee shop and used bookstore. You can also visit our local stores on Menzies’ Street. The James Bay Village offers shopping, restaurants, and coffee shops, just three minutes walk from our home. The James Bay Coffee Co. has excellent coffee, snacks and a wonderful, quiet place to talk, write, study or just ‘hang out.’
